The very pleasant village of Durrus (10Km from Bantry) is located at the head of Dunmanus Bay on what is called the ‘Friendly Cove’, on one of the loveliest and most unspoilt coasts in Ireland. From here you have the choice of two intriguing peninsulas to explore Sheeps Head and Mizen Head Peninsulas.
Someone was once asked where was Durrus? A map of Ireland was found and the location pointed out to which the response was ‘you live in the teddy bear’s toes’! Hello? The teddy bear’s toes? She pointed out that (in her opinion anyway) Ireland was shaped like a teddy bear and the peninsulas down in the South West were his toes. (Not our story but we like it anyway!)
There are a number of public gardens established in the area, including ‘Cois Abhann’ and ‘Kilvarock’, and in recent years the village has seen a sizable development of property for use by tourists, and its pubs – particularly “The Long Boat” – are popular stopover points.
