Cork is exceptionally fortunate to have a choice of well stocked and very clean rivers. Licences are required to fish them so prepare well before coming to visit.

One of our favourite locations is Ballyvolane House, a historic Irish country home of extraordinary warmth, style and comfort that provides luxury accommodation and salmon fishing on the river Blackwater.

River Ilen
The River Ilen which is in the area of Skibbereen in West Cork is a spate river and the runs of salmon and grilse are dependent on there being sufficient water to encourage them. However, when fish are running there is usually a good chance that they will take quite readily. Salmon runs tend to be enhanced when there are spring and neap tides in addition to any rainfall. However, grilse in particular, will run quite far upstream, even in drought conditions. Much of the fishing is controlled by the River Ilen Anglers Club who issue daily and weekly permits to visitors. A state licence is also required.

Attractive shore angling sites off by-road at eastern end of lake and boats are available for hire. The lake holds a good stock of wild, native Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout are stocked regularly to maintain a high stock density and give worth-while angling returns. Small Eels, Rudd and occasional Pike are also present.”
